Mount Vernon Bicentennial Projects Planned by the Knox County Historical Society

Two Hundred Years of Downtown Business

Our nearly complete collection of Mount Vernon CIty Directories and Telephone books range from 1858 to the present. Using these, we plan to document the names and locations of all the businesses that operated on North and South Main Streets, and probably one block east and west on major side streets. When complete, we will prepare a listing for each storefront which shows all the known businesses that occupied that location through Mount Vernon's history. We may have artifacts for some of these stores as well, such as hats, hatboxes, business envelopes and stationery, etc.
